Team NikeFIVE vs DHL Barbarians - 8 FEB 2010 (L) 4-3

Last night the DHL Barbarians played Team NikeFIVE in a much-anticipated match-up. It was a game that many talked about as these old rivals had many a chirp and scores to settle from previous "friendly" encounters at Kenridge and Welgemoed rugby fields.

From the kick-off the DHL Barbarians new defensive strategy held firm, however, it all changed in an instance when Jaco duToit from Team NikeFIVE managed to squeeze through a hole in the defence and cross the try line for the match opener. It came as a bit of a shock to all, as it seemed to be an impossible gap that was taken...! As the match progressed, the DHL Barbarians managed a couple of sound attacking moves and were very unlucky not to score once or twice. Despite this, and the mounting pressure on attack from the DHL boys, the Team NikeFIVE defence managed to keep them at bay, and at times it seemed that another try will never be scored.
The half time score was 2-1 up to the boys in blue.
The second half was a much different affair, and from the start the pace of the game picked up tremendously. A different game plan was needed by both teams in order to score, and from the looks of thing, both teams then started to play the quick ball. A lack of concentration from Team NikeFIVE meant that Jaco du Toit (from DHL fame) made a blistering run down the far touch line to score off a great run-around loop pass, and seconds later, Fernando managed to grab an intercept that was awarded much to the disapointment of Team NikeFIVE, and ongoing complaints for an offside call... it never came.

The end score was 4-3 to the DHL Barbarians.
It was a true test for all the players on the pitch and a great battle once again against these old friends and foes of ours.
Congrats to Emile ans his DHL Barbarians team for securing the victory and good luck for the rest of the season. We will meet you again.
